If it's the finer things in life that interest you, then you may want fine wines to be part of that mix. Life’s too short to drink bad wine, but there’s a difference between drinking good wine and trying fine wines: it’s a specific term that tends to mean the higher bracket of the world’s wines, and maybe not the sort of bottle you would choose to open every day. There’s good value wine at all price levels, but in the world of fine wine, a bit of investment is needed to open the door to a whole new level of tasting experience. Fine wines would tend to encompass some of the world’s most renowned wine regions, so they are the sort of wines you might want to consider buying if you’re starting a wine collection, or building your own cellar. Fine wines are likely to be wines that can age a little, or can mature for many years, and have the capacity to develop over time and evolve into complex creatures that will offer a different tasting experience each time you return to try another bottle. Fine wines are at the pinnacle of the wine-making world, and are usually the wines that producers will make each year as the specific expression of their best vineyards – the winemaker’s calling card to demonstrate how he, or she, approaches wine, and how they like to express the particular specifics of the ‘terroir’ of where they grow their grapes. If you’re looking for a fine wine experience, think of buying from some of those great wine regions of the world, and consider buying the best wine which an individual producer makes: each producer is likely to have a range of wines he produces, but not all will aspire to be fine wine, and perhaps only the best will be the real expression of the land where the grapes are grown. To enjoy fine wine, look to regions like Bordeaux, Burgundy, and the Rhone Valley in France, and for other fine wine experiences, try some of the great white wines from the Mosel in Germany. In Italy, the fine wines of Barolo and Barbaresco in Piemonte, and the ‘Supertuscans’ of Tuscany are all worthy of the term, and will enhance any collection, developing and maturing over time to provide an enduring experience. The New World too has its fine wines – expressions of individual excellence from particular growers who are lucky enough to be able to make their wine in a place that carries true individuality and expresses that through what ends up in the bottle. Fine wine indeed. |
